Jiu-Jitsu: Wins and Lessons

A feature length documentary for Summit Grappling Academy.

Capturing the heart, hustle, and unyielding spirit of Isle of Man’s local athletes as they strive for greatness at the Jiu-Jitsu British Open.

When Andy’s longtime friend and fighting partner Conrad Roberts approached us to create a video for Summit Grappling Academy, it quickly became clear this was more than a simple film project. There was a powerful story at the heart of Summit Grappling Academy - one that reflected years of dedication, resilience, and community, and it deserved to be told as a full documentary.

Summit Grappling Academy began with humble roots, operating out of a small garage with just a handful of members. Over time, it has grown into a professional, purpose-built jiu-jitsu academy, producing athletes capable of competing at the highest level. The documentary charts this evolution, capturing both the growth of the academy and the people who helped build it. Along the way, it features insights from the founder Conrad Roberts, and key members, including Hayley Curtis, Gianni Fabrizio, Sean Coates, and Joe Kane.

Narrated by Director Andy Orton, with the support of sponsor Conister Bank, the story tracks the highs and lows of several local athletes as they prepare for and compete in the JiuJitsu British Open. The focus goes beyond competition results, documenting the intense training, personal sacrifices, and emotional challenges that define life on and off the mats. Through interviews and candid moments, the film highlights the mindset required to pursue excellence in the sport. The journey culminates in an extraordinary achievement: three British Champions - a remarkable result for a small island competing on a national stage.

We premiered the documentary at the Broadway Cinema in the summer of 2025 - a deeply rewarding moment that allowed us to share the finished film with those who shared their stories and brought it to life. The event was a fitting celebration of Summit Grappling Academy’s journey and a reminder of the powerful community that continues to drive it forward.
